Quick answer: Sod can be installed from early spring (April) through late fall (November) in Ontario. The ideal windows are April to June and September to October when temperatures are moderate and rainfall is more frequent.
Spring Installation (April – June)
Spring is the most popular time for sod installation in the GTA. The ground has thawed, temperatures are mild, and spring rains help new sod establish roots quickly. If you install in April or May, your lawn will be fully rooted and ready for summer use by July.
Summer Installation (July – August)
Summer installation works fine but requires more diligent watering. The heat means new sod can dry out faster, so you will need to water 2-3 times per day for the first two weeks. Sodding Company installs throughout the summer — we just make sure you know the watering schedule.
Fall Installation (September – October)
Fall is actually the best kept secret for sod installation. Cooler temperatures reduce heat stress on new sod, and fall rains keep the soil moist naturally. The roots continue growing even as the grass slows down above ground, giving you a head start for spring.
Can You Install Sod in Winter?
In Ontario, sod installation stops once the ground freezes (typically late November). The sod cannot root into frozen soil. If you are planning a spring lawn, the best approach is to book your estimate in late winter so you are first in line when the season opens in April.
