Best Time to Install Sod in the GTA — Spring vs Fall
Updated April 2026 | By Sodding Company | Ontario’s Sod Specialists
The best time to install sod in the GTA is spring (April to June) or early fall (August to October). Both seasons offer the cooler temperatures and moisture levels that help new sod establish roots quickly. Summer and winter installations are possible but come with trade-offs. Here’s everything you need to know.
Spring Sodding (April – June) ✅ Best Season
Spring is the most popular time for sod installation across the GTA — and for good reason. After a long winter, homeowners want their lawns looking good fast, and the conditions are ideal:
- Soil temperatures are warm enough for root growth (above 10°C)
- Rainfall is frequent, reducing the need for manual watering
- Mild temperatures prevent the sod from drying out
- New lawn is established and ready to enjoy by summer
The downside: Spring is peak season. Crews book up fast — sometimes 2–3 weeks out by mid-May. If you want spring installation, book early.
Fall Sodding (August – October) ✅ Excellent Season
Early fall is actually ideal for sod installation in Ontario — arguably better than spring for root development:
- Cooler temperatures reduce stress on new sod
- Less watering required than summer
- Fewer weeds competing with new grass
- Sod has all fall and the following spring to establish deep roots
Deadline: Aim to install before mid-October in the GTA. Sod needs 4–6 weeks to root before the first hard frost. Late October installations are risky.
Summer Sodding (July – August) ⚠️ Possible but Demanding
Sod can be installed in summer, but it requires significantly more watering — sometimes twice daily during heat waves. The risk of the sod drying out before it roots is real. If you go with summer installation, be prepared to water aggressively for the first 3–4 weeks.
Winter (November – March) ❌ Not Recommended
Frozen ground prevents roots from establishing. Sod installed in winter will not survive. Wait until spring.
Month-by-Month Guide for the GTA

| June | ✅ Good | Still excellent, getting warmer |
| July | ⚠️ Caution | Heavy watering required |
| August | ✅ Good | Fall season begins — excellent |
| September | ✅ Great | Ideal conditions |
| October | ⚠️ Early only | Must finish before mid-October |
| Nov–Mar | ❌ Avoid | Ground frozen |
How to Care for New Sod in the GTA
Regardless of when you install, the first 3–4 weeks are critical:
- Water daily for the first 2 weeks — keep the soil moist 2–3 inches deep
- Stay off it for the first 2 weeks while roots establish
- First mow when grass reaches 4 inches — set blade high
- No fertilizer for the first 4–6 weeks
