How to Water New Sod in Ontario: Your First 30 Days (2026 Guide)

Short answer: water brand-new sod heavily every day for the first two weeks, aiming for about one inch of water daily in the cool of the early morning, then taper off over the following two weeks as the roots take hold. In an Ontario summer, skipping even a day or two in that first week can brown out a perfect lawn for good.

We install sod across the GTA every week, and watering is the single biggest reason a new lawn either thrives or fails. The sod itself is the easy part. What you do in the first 30 days decides everything.

Why the First 30 Days Matter So Much

Fresh sod arrives as living grass with its roots cut off at the farm. Until those roots grow down into your soil, the sod cannot pull up its own water, so it depends entirely on you. Keep the root zone consistently moist and the grass knits into the soil within two to three weeks. Let it dry out and the roots die before they ever anchor.

Your Week-by-Week Watering Schedule

Days 1 to 2: Soak it in immediately

Water within 30 minutes of installation, before the first section even finishes drying. Soak it until water pools slightly and the soil beneath the sod is wet to a depth of about 10 centimetres. On a hot day, water again in the afternoon.

Days 3 to 14: Deep and daily

Water once or twice every day, with early morning being best. The goal is roughly one inch of water per day, enough to keep the soil under the sod constantly damp but not swampy. During an Ontario heat wave, add a light midday top-up to stop the edges from curling.

Days 15 to 21: Begin to taper

The roots are taking hold now. Cut back to every other day, but water more deeply each time to encourage the roots to chase the moisture downward. Gently tug a corner of the sod. If it resists, the roots are anchoring.

Days 22 to 30: Transition to normal

Move to two or three deep waterings per week. By the end of the month your lawn should be rooted, mowable, and ready for a normal Ontario routine of about one inch per week including rainfall.

How to Tell if You Are Watering Enough

  • The footstep test: walk across the lawn. If your footprints stay visible, the grass is thirsty.
  • The peek test: lift a corner of the sod in a few spots. The soil underneath should feel cool and moist, never dry or dusty.
  • The colour test: bluish-grey patches or curling edges mean dry spots that need more water fast.

Common Watering Mistakes We See in the GTA

  • Watering at midday: most of it evaporates before it reaches the roots. Early morning is far more effective.
  • Light, frequent sprinkles: shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface where they dry out. Water deeply instead.
  • Forgetting the edges and corners: these dry out first, especially next to driveways and walls that hold heat.
  • Mowing too soon: wait until the sod resists a gentle tug and the grass is about 8 centimetres tall, usually two to three weeks.

Ontario-Specific Notes

Heavy clay soil, common across much of the GTA and the 905 belt, holds water longer, so watch for pooling and ease off if the surface stays soggy. Sandy or new-build fill drains fast and needs more frequent watering. During summer some municipalities set lawn watering restrictions, so check your local rules. New sod usually qualifies for an exemption in the first weeks, but it is worth confirming with your city.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I water new sod each day?

For the first two weeks, aim for about one inch of water per day, split into one early-morning soak and, on hot days, a lighter afternoon top-up.

Can I overwater new sod?

Yes. If the soil stays soggy and water pools for hours, the roots can suffocate and fungus can set in. The soil should be consistently moist, not flooded.

When can I walk on or mow my new sod?

Stay off it as much as possible for the first two weeks. You can usually mow after two to three weeks, once the sod resists a gentle tug and the grass reaches about 8 centimetres.

What if it rains?

Count rainfall toward your daily total. After a heavy soaking rain you can skip that day, then resume the schedule once the surface starts to dry.
