A July & August survival guide — by Israel Kaplan, owner of Sodding Company
Yes — you can absolutely lay sod in the middle of an Ontario summer. Fresh sod establishes successfully in July and August every single year across the GTA. The one thing that changes in the heat is water: summer sod needs more of it, more often, for the first two weeks. Get the watering right and your new lawn roots in just like it would in spring.
Why Summer Sod Gets an Unfair Reputation
The fear is real but the cause is simple. In a heat wave — especially above 30°C — a fresh roll of sod can dry out and start to brown within 48 hours if it isn’t watered enough. People see that happen, blame the season, and assume summer is the wrong time. It isn’t. A browning new lawn in July is almost always a watering problem, not a season problem. Sod is a living plant with shallow, freshly cut roots; in the heat it simply drinks more while those roots reach down into the soil. The golden rule: for the first two weeks of a summer install, the soil under your sod should never be allowed to dry out. Moist all day, every day, is the goal.
Your Summer Sod Watering Schedule
Here is the watering plan we give every GTA customer who installs in the summer heat. Adjust up on the hottest days and down if it rains.
| Timeframe | How often | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–14 (the critical window) | 3 times a day — morning, midday, late afternoon | Keep the soil under the sod constantly moist. On 30°C+ days, add a 4th light watering. |
| Weeks 3–4 | Once a day, but longer and deeper | Encourage roots to grow down instead of staying shallow. |
| After ~1 month | 2–3 deep waterings per week | A normal, established summer lawn. |
Full step-by-step aftercare, including mowing and fertilizing timing, is in our New Sod Care Guide.
Heat-Stress Risk and How We Mitigate It on Install Day
We take a few extra steps on hot-weather installs that a DIY install typically can’t match: we pick up fresh-cut Kentucky Bluegrass from the sod farm the morning of your install — never sod that’s been sitting on a pallet in the heat — and we water immediately after each section is laid rather than waiting until the whole yard is done. On the hottest days we’ll also adjust the install schedule to avoid laying sod during the peak afternoon heat where possible.
Comparing Summer Installs to Spring and Fall Timing
Spring and fall are lower-effort because the weather does more of the watering work for you. Summer sod isn’t worse quality or slower to root — it just asks more of you (or of us) on the watering side for those first two weeks. If your timeline is flexible, our Best Time to Install Sod in the GTA guide breaks down the trade-offs season by season. If your timeline isn’t flexible — a new deck going in, a move-in date, a summer event — there’s no reason to wait for fall.
Is Our Take-Root Guarantee Different for Summer Installs?
No. Every install, summer included, is covered by the same take-root guarantee: follow the watering schedule above and if the sod still doesn’t root, we come back and make it right. The schedule is simply more frequent in summer heat — the guarantee terms don’t change.
Signs a Summer Install Isn’t Taking Root
Some browning and stress in week one is normal, especially on hot days. What isn’t normal: sod that stays dry and crunchy despite consistent watering, or the opposite — sod that turns sour-smelling and mushy from overwatering (see our overwatering & rot diagnosis guide if that’s what you’re seeing). If you’ve been sticking to the schedule and it still isn’t recovering after two to three weeks, call us — it’s likely a take-root guarantee situation.
Summer Sod FAQ
Can you lay sod in summer in Ontario?
Yes. Fresh sod establishes successfully in July and August across the GTA every year. The heat changes how much you need to water, not whether summer installation works.
How often do I need to water new sod in summer?
Three times a day for the first two weeks on normal hot days, with a fourth light watering added on days above 30°C. The soil under the sod should never be allowed to dry out during that window.
Is summer sod more likely to fail than spring or fall sod?
No — it just needs a stricter watering routine for the first two weeks. Sod laid correctly and watered on schedule roots the same way regardless of season.
Does the take-root guarantee cover summer installs?
Yes, on the same terms as any other season: follow the watering schedule, and if the sod doesn’t take root, we come back and make it right.
What’s the most common mistake with summer sod?
Under-watering, usually from watering once a day instead of the three-to-four-times-daily schedule the first two weeks actually need in real summer heat.
